Why were some public information films so scary?

We’ve dealt with many companies and websites in a search engine optimization capacity. The search engine optimization world is one surrounded by mystery. Although there is a thriving online community, search engine optimization is not typically offered as a course at schools or universities around the country. It is very much a skilled learned through experience.

But, often time’s companies or “SEO experts” don’t know exactly what they’re doing. Not only is this unacceptable as you may be paying these companies or individuals good money, but in the long run some techniques employed by less experienced search engine optimizers or those willing to take short cuts can cause your site to become permanently banned by the search engines.

Over the years we’ve learned that education is the key to success. Whether you’ve just begun the process of looking for a company to provide search engine optimization services, are well along the process, or already have a company you’re dealing with and want to make sure they’re doing things correct this is a helpful and simple 5 question guide:

1) Can you get my website to the top of the search engines?

This is an important question, and one you may have already planned to ask. What you want to look for is whether or not the company digs deeper and what their response is. For example you should expect to hear things like:

what would you like to rank for?

are their competitors in your market that you believe have a great web presence with search rankings you would like to emulate?

Without intimate knowledge of your industry as well extensive research it is hard to know what you really need to rank for and whether the terms you think are important will actually drive results. Additionally watch out for too quick of an answer. Although a great search engine optimizer may be able to get you to #1 for something you want, it should never be guaranteed and it isn’t an overnight process.

2) Once my site is created, how do you make sure I show up on the search engines?

Many search engine optimizers or firms will talk about website submission. In reality all that is really needed for search engines to know that your website is there is a link (from any site on the Internet) back to your site. Some firms may talk about repeated search engine submission, but this is completely unnecessary and could actually end up hurting your rankings as the repeated blasts may be considered spam. One key thing to look out for when discussing this question is the mention of sitemaps and webmaster tools. Many powerful websites (content management sites, shopping carts, etc.) can automatically create a sitemap (a single file that shows the location of every page on your site). When this file is setup under a search engine’s webmaster tool console it can help significantly to increase your rankings and should be a staple of any search engine optimizers toolset.

3) What is link building, do I need it, and how do I do it?

3 questions in 1, I know, but this one is important.

Although on-page optimization (the way your website is built, text, etc.) is important, link building comes in at a very close second. Yes you do need link building! And the company you commission needs to assist in this process. If they don’t mention this run the other way. Your website needs links-in from other websites across the Internet to help you rank well. Links act like votes of confidence - the more you have, the more powerful your site. There are a number of quick ways to get links, but link building is a long process, but well worth the time or expense.

One thing to watch out for in link building campaigns is the creation of many smaller websites that then link back to your main site. Although in theory it is not a bad idea the truth is because of the nature of the search engines it is a colossal waste of time and money that would be better spent actually building quality links to your main site - from existing established sites throughout the Internet.

4) How do you measure the SEO process?

The advent of new tools and technology has made the measurement of search engine optimization and your website’s overall success easier than ever. Another key component to a successful search engine optimized site or campaign is the installation of proper metrics tools and the review both by the company being commissioned, as well as you the site owner. Like many things search engine optimization varies depending on a number of different factors, so implementing techniques is important, but measuring and refining are key next steps.

5) Do you start with pay per click marketing?

A good search engine optimization campaign should start with pay per click marketing and the company you commission should at least suggest this, even if you are opposed to it.

Why should you start with pay per click marketing?

Well, to understand why you have to start with pay per click marketing you have to first understand the difference between paid search (PPC) and organic search ( , Atilus Web Development & Internet Marketing.

A UK Government minister says the referendum row has caused a bad week for his party - but vows to fight on.

I LOVE picture books, so I’m always happy when I find a new picture book that is as delightful as this new release from children’s author Shelly Becker. From the very first page I could identify with little Gail when her “greedy” Cousin Claire came to visit and Mother told Gail she should be nice and find something that Claire would enjoy.

When Gail sees that Cousin Claire has snatched her teddy bear, she just can’t take it.

Well, then I snapped (I hadn’t napped),
A fury filled my head.

I scowled so bad with eyes red mad,
and this is what I said:

“MINE, MINE, MINE! You give it back!
And stop that squeaky whine.
Let’s get this straight now, Cousin Claire.
See all this stuff? It’s MINE!”

Gail goes on to describe her precious belongings, one by one, for Cousin Claire, letting her know in no uncertain terms that she should keep her hands off of EVERYTHING!

When Clair sobs and moans, Mom comes in once again to offer another tip for Gail. But the surprising way Gail takes Mom’s advice is a hoot!

I won’t give away the story here and spoil the fun for readers. I’ll just say that kids aren’t the only ones who will be charmed by little Gail’s “dark side” and her efforts to change and learn to share.

I was amazed at how well illustrator Hideko Takahashi was able to convey Gail’s and Claire’s feelings through their facial expressions in such simple illustrations. But they were perfect!

This book is MUST HAVE for any preschool’s (or preschooler’s) library!

MINE! MINE! MINE!
Written by Shelly Becker
Illustrated by Hideko Takahashi
Sterling Publishing Co., Inc.
$14.95 US - $19.95 Canada
ISBN: 1-4027-2538-8
Ages 3-6
Reviewed by Suzanne Lieurance

Government to consult over whether to relax abortion rules and allow terminations outside hospital in England.

It’s a snowy day here in Kansas City, where I’m watching people trudge from the parking lot to the school behind my house as they make their way to work.

As I sit here all snug and cozy in my little home office, ready to email something to an editor on the other side of the country, I can’t help but think about all the reasons I LOVE being a freelance writer.

Here are the Top 10 reasons I LOVE this line of work:

1. I can wear anything I want to work - which is usually a pair of sweatpants and a old t-shirt. OR I can just stay in my pjs all day if I don’t have to leave the house.

2. I form professional relationships (and often personal friendships) with people all over the world since the majority of the writing assignments I do come from contacts through the Internet.

3. I’m completely in charge of my work schedule and I can take as many assignments as I can handle at one time or I can take time away from writing if I want to travel or teach or coach.

4. I get paid for doing many of the things I LOVE to do - coach, teach, write, travel, etc.

5. If I have a client who turns out to be difficult to work with, I simply don’t work with this client again.

6. I get to visit schools across the country and talk to children about my books and what it’s like to be an author.

7. I can nap every afternoon if I choose - and often I do.

8. I can arrange to have lunch with friends whenever I want, and I can take my work to a library or coffee shop if I want a change of scenery.

9. I get to create my own worlds in my books and stories and get totally “lost” in these worlds as I’m writing about them. That’s soooo much fun!

10. I get to host my own Internet Talk Radio Show - Book Bites for Kids every weekday afternoon on blogtalkradio.com and talk with other children’s authors and/or illustrators. I learn something from every single person I interview and I have such fun talking with them.

I could go on and on with the reasons I LOVE being a freelance writer.

But today, I guess my number one reason for being a freelance writer is that I don’t have to leave the house to get my work done.

I can look out the window and happily sing, “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”

The world waits with bated breath for the final version of Windows Vista to be in the market. Speculation is rife whether the release will be end December 2006 or end January 2007 and whether Microsoft will keep all its promises.

While Windows supporters feel that the next OS will be Windows Vista world wide there are others who feel that Windows Vista will leave much to be desired. It magazines, e-zines, forum, and blogs are all abuzz with Vista news, views, and reviews.

According to an in depth review in Computer World by Scott Finnie Windows Vista has security as its first objective and security can be had without paying for an expensive operating system. The only other plus is the aero glass and graphics capabilities. According to Finnie,

The band are inviting fans to register online for free tickets to their London and New York shows.

Keynes advocated, in his General Theory, that wages be kept stable because lower wages would reduce aggregate demand by reducing income and, therefore, consumption. Reductions in aggregate demand would offset any benefits accruing from the lower labor price. Although in favor of a “free market” Keynes did not believe the government should allow wages to be driven to their point of marginal utility, otherwise known as starvation of the middle class. Keynes simply thought that full employment should be a policy objective of the polity, irrespective of the wishes of those with a temporary enjoyment of the majority of society’s investment capital, otherwise known as the wealthy.

Adam Smith argued that jobs which were more difficult to learn would be paid a higher wage because of the scarcity of people willing, or able, to acquire that knowledge without additional compensation. This theory may not explain particularly well why world class golfers earn more that world class ping pong players or why rap artists earn more than children’s book authors, but it is a useful enough generalization. Smith also believed that specialization and the division of labor were keys to raising productivity and thence wages. Just to prove that even geniuses can get it wrong, Smith also believed that pay would be higher for dirty or unsafe occupations like coal mining or hanging people. Maybe hanging coal miners pays a lot in Smith’s world view, but that modern theorist of “dirty jobs” Mike Rowe has certainly shown that dirty jobs pay off in pride, not cash.

Given the insights of these two giants of modern economic theory the question turns to how can labor unions be used to raise real wages across the rapidly eroding middle class and working poor? The labor unions are posited as the motive force behind this economic evolution because:

1) unions are in big trouble and crave big ideas to survive,

2) the employers have a solemn duty to maximize shareholder returns which naively calls for opposition to union wage demands, and;

3) the government is rife with whack-job monetarists who think full employment is 5% of the country out of work. The equilibrium theory of free trade promises to even all this out over the long run, but that means that eventually all the peasants in China will be earning $35 an hour; or, the middle class in the United States will be earning $35 a month. Which end of this seesaw do you think will tip faster?

Accepting that the unions have the resources to follow Adam Smith’s recommendations; the question becomes; do they have the political will and the strategic vision? As a former member of the AFL-CIO, for some too brief, but enlightening, summers, it seemed clear that the old union agenda was focused on splitting the existing pie excruciatingly fairly rather than baking a pie so big that everyone could pig out.

Globalization makes strikes impossible because jobs simply vanish faster as wages are pushed higher. Real wages only rise, long term, if work becomes more specialized. The strategic crime is that the unions, historically, have focused on increasing wages without investing in human capital. They have allowed workers to become commoditized through collective bargaining; teaching the large employers that all workers have the same value and, therefore, the same replacement value. Even more difficult from a strategic change management perspective, the emotional structure of middle class and working poor wage earners plays into this paradigm. Equality is the emotional fulcrum of the middle class; the driving need to be treated fairly. The upper class is concerned with liberty; the driving need to win the race. Is it any wonder that the money falls into the hands of those striving to win at any cost versus those who really really want the race to be fair?

Should the unions take up this challenge, and reconstitute their role to create real wealth for their charges, rather than simply cushioning the downward slide, they have to rethink their economic structure and invest in the optimization of human capital. Unions should be the largest investors in R&D aimed at optimizing the productive output of individual workers; instead they debate whether carpenters or masons can handle composite roofing tiles containing both wood chips and concrete.

Enhanced skills will demand higher wages by creating higher value, new employee-owned technologies will increase productivity and real wages by creating shareholder value, and specialized training programs will accelerate Adam Smith’s program of specialization by creating owner-operators who bring advanced capabilities with them to the worksite. This should be a conservative economist’s dream come true because the unions then create millions of small entrepreneurs maximizing returns, instead of a handful of union stewards minimizing contractual losses.

There is a tidal wave of economic disruption headed toward the developed countries via the Internet that is either little understood or quietly ignored. Spend a few hours looking at the freelance bidding sites that “auction” professional jobs broken down into hourly or daily tasks. The bidding on one recent graphics design project ranged from $800 dollars from an established U.S. graphic artist to $2 from an established Pakistani graphic artist. The so-called knowledge worker in the U.S. who believes their job is safe because of local access and specialized knowledge is no more secure than the General Motors MIG welder waiting for the new robots to be bolted to the factory floor.

The unions, the government, or industry can play a role in this transformation. Industry will invest in outsourcing because it’s the path of least resistance. The government will blather with grandiose self-righteousness and unproductive partisan dithering. That leaves only the unions with the economic and human resources to force us into the next paradigm. Failing that, we all best learn subsistence farming all over again, those store-bought food stuffs might be out of our price range.

Simply having a bad debt against your name does not imply that you are a risky borrower. But some lenders may take this tag seriously and will not offer any financial help. But now things look quite positive with the introduction of bad debt unsecured loans. This loan does not ask for any security and provides finances to support your needs.

While providing bad debt unsecured loans, lenders do not ask for any asset to be placed as collateral. This clause provides a respite to borrowers like tenants and non home owners who do not possess any asset. Besides, home owners too can access this loan at ease. But usually lenders to cut down the risk factor involved, figure out those borrowers who have an excellent repaying capacity. So to obtain the monetary assistance of this loan, borrower should have a good earning and the repayment ability to convince the lender.

Under this program, the applicant can avail amount in the range of £100-£25,000 which can be paid back in a short time period of 6 months -10 years. As this loan is approved without any collateral and offered to bad credit borrowers, interest rate levied are slightly higher than other loans. To compare the rates, collect the quotes of various lenders and then subsequently select a suitable deal.

Bad credit unsecured loans can be used to meet expenses on home improvement, car purchase, wedding, vacation etc. it also offers a chance to improve the credit score by subsequently repaying the amount within the specified time period.

Now a days online lenders are considered as a source of low rate bad debt unsecured loans compared to other traditional modes like banks and financial institutions. But before availing this loan, borrower must compare the quotes to arrive at a suitable deal based on his circumstances.

Government to consult over whether to relax abortion rules and allow terminations outside hospital in England.

The easiest way to learn how to finance property development is to go online with a specialist website. A website such as this will offer all the information needed for you to understand what you are taking on and how to get the best deal. By choosing to go with a broker when it comes to taking out borrowing you can save time and money even with the fees that you will have to pay.

Property development finance can be taken out as commercial or residential loans depending on the project. Each will be based on the individual’s circumstances which will determine how much you will pay when it comes to the interest rates. Interest rates will usually fall between 1.5% and 2.5% above the base rate which is set out by the Bank of England. Factors which are taken into account when setting the rate will include the experience one has when it comes to property development. They will also be based on the industry sector at the time and the proposal you are putting forward for the loan.

A broker will be able to explain and work out a proposal with you which includes the valuation of the property you are interested in. Lenders will be able to work quicker if a broker has helped to set out the proposal and it has been validated. This will also get the project off to the best start possible and make things go more smoothly. Learning how to finance property development is not the easiest of things to understand and it is essential you take all the advice you possibly can.

When it comes to amount a lender will allow you to borrow then this will be based on the loan to project costs. These are influenced by the gross property development values which are projected. However you can expect around 70% to 75% of the price of purchase and the costs of building. Some lenders are prepared to give 100% funding but you will have to meet certain criteria and have an excellent track record in property development.

Usually the amount you will need to borrow will be in the region of hundreds of thousands of pounds and due to this lenders offer an interest only loan. What this means is that you will borrow the amount and then pay only the interest which this accumulates over the term of the loan. However the capitol will have to be repaid in full once the loan had come to full term. The lender will usually ask for proof that you have the means of paying this before signing off the loan. You can take a repayment loan but the repayments will be significantly higher than those of an interest only loan. However the advantage to this is that you will pay off the total of the loan over the term you take it out for. Each repayment will take a little off the interest and the capital.

These are just some of the reasons why it imperative to get all the help you possibly can when it comes to learning how to finance property development the easy way. Other factors which you have to consider include choosing between a fixed and variable rate of interest and making sure additional costs have not been included in the cost of the borrowing.

Many tropical insects could face extinction by the end of this century due to rising temperatures, scientists say.

In prior articles, we talked about our replacement exterior front door, the one we ordered through one of the local big box stores in the fall. And, if you recall, we placed the order for this door when the big box store was having a ‘do not pay for 12 months when you pay for your purchase on our credit card’ type of deal.

So, the facts in our case were the following:

Date Order Placed - Sept 28, 2007
Initial Date for Door Delivery to Retailer’s Store - Mid-November
Revisited Date for Door Delivery - End November
Actual Date of Door Delivery to Retailer’s Store - approximately December 7th
Scheduled Date of Door installation - January 8, 2008.

So, by the time the door is to be installed, more than 3 months will have passed form the original order date. That then makes the deferred payment deal of 12 months no-pay-no-interest to a 9 month deal. Everything else being equal, we will still have to pay the cost of the door by Sept 28, 2008 to avoid 28.8 % finance interest.

Did you know that you can, on occasion, have the store (if you complain in a reasonable manner a sufficient number of times) adjust the start of the deferred payment plan? We didn’t. We thought that it was locked in stone.

Well, here’s today’s tip. If you encounter a situation yourselves similar to ours (the actual type of material does not matter), you can ask for the deferred payment start date to be delayed until the materials are delivered to, or installed for, you.

So, in our case, the new start date for the deferred payment plan is now January 8, 2008 meaning that we do not have to pay for the new door until January 8, 2009.

And, ours is not an isolated case. Oh no. When we went to the big box store and brought with us our monthly statement of our account with them, as well as the order form, the person at the Service desk filled out a rather messy form. It looked as if it had been photocopied many times, as if it was the photocopy of the copy of the copy of the copy….. of the original printed form.

When I inquired about this, the response was somewhat surprising, at least to us. The service associate said that it is such a common occurrence that they ran out of the printed form and had to start to make copies of the last blank forum!

So, don’t be afraid to ask for this deferral of the deferral plan if your materials are significantly delayed. You never know what you can receive if you ask, respectfully (i.e. not in a rant), yet firmly and have facts to support your case.

A major study adds to growing evidence suggesting breastfeeding boosts a child’s intelligence.

One of the main and important accessories for a car stereo is the audio capacitor that helps in gathering power for the amplifier to produce quality sound for music lovers. To hear thriving bass, audio capacitors are a practically required accessory. The reason for this is that bass notes use up a multiple number of times more power than treble (high frequency) notes. When bass notes hit, the amplifier needs to be supplied with enough current from its power source, the car battery, to power the speaker quickly enough. However, the response time of most car batteries to supply current fast enough is not adequate.

This all happens in a fraction of a second, but some bass notes can hit so quickly that the car battery cannot handle them, so those notes would be missed because the speakers were not supplied enough power by the amplifier. This problem is solved by adding power capacitors. The power capacitors store excess power from the car battery, and when a bass note hits, the capacitor supplies it. Since the response time of the capacitor is much faster than the response time of the battery, these bass notes can be nicely sounded through the amplifier and speakers. This is the case, even with fast, repeated, heavy and loud bass notes, as many hard rock or rap music CDs will demonstrate. The range of car audio capacitors is generally from .5 farads to 3 farads.

After iPod came to the market, it immediately became the cynosure in the eyes of the music lovers. With the iPod came accessories like integration cables intended especially for car iPods. This cable allows the user to control the iPod straight from the head unit itself.

In addition, the integration cable offers high speed and gives total control over different functionalities of the iPod. This cable is flexible and long enough to be placed anywhere in the car. They are very easy to install and allows the user to get more from your iPod.

Another accessory is the CD changer, that lets you store and switch between dozens of CDs. You can set the player to either random play or sequential, or program it like a juke box to play the choice and selection of CDs that you want without having to remove and reinsert each CD one at a time. That can be an even greater asset while driving, because with your hands on the wheel, you cannot reach over very easily and change CDs again and again. The CD changer, on the other hand, can hold and switch between dozens of CDs without a problem.
